10-SUMMARY OF THE TWO WITNESSES
The other event expected to happen just prior to the midst of the Tribulation is that the two prophets or witnesses of God appear. One is Elijah, and the other appears to be Moses.
The
second part of the Tribulation is 1260 days. When the two witnesses appear upon
the earth, their ministry will last 1260 days. Then they will be killed. Their
bodies will lie in the street three and a half days. After the three and a half
days, they shall stand upon their feet and ascend up to heaven. Combine the
length of their ministry with the three and a half days and it equals 1263½
days. This would lead us to believe that they will appear just prior to the
midst of the Tribulation or, perhaps, about the same time that the Antichrist
shall be killed. Their resurrection must occur prior to the Battle of Armageddon,
which is immediately after the Tribulation of those days.
The Scriptures show that they have the power to shut heaven
that it rain not in the days of their prophecy.
Many scriptures mention the rain being shut off during the
Tribulation. They seem to reveal that this happens during the second part of
the Tribulation. We have no scriptural evidence that the rains will be shut
off during the first part of the Tribulation. Quite the contrary, we do have
evidence from the Scriptures that the springs of waters will flow, and the crops
will still be growing. Rain is needed to grow crops. Thus, it seems clear that
the two prophets are upon the earth during the second part of the Tribulation,
as they have the power TO SHUT HEAVEN, THAT IT RAIN NOT IN THE DAYS OF THEIR
PROPHECY-Rev 11:6.
The rain resumes during the first month of the Millennium.
This is also a clear indication that the two prophets of God will be upon the
earth during the second part of the Tribulation. It is written, BE GLAD THEN,
YE CHILDREN OF ZION, AND REJOICE IN THE LORD YOUR GOD: FOR HE HATH GIVEN YOU
THE FORMER RAIN MODERATELY, AND HE WILL CAUSE TO COME DOWN FOR YOU THE RAIN,
THE FORMER RAIN, AND THE LATTER RAIN IN THE FIRST MONTH. AND THE FLOORS SHALL
BE FULL OF WHEAT, AND THE VATS SHALL OVERFLOW WITH WINE AND OIL-Joel 2:23,24.
The rain that was held back during the second part of the Tribulation shall
come down during the very beginning of the Millennium.
As the Scriptures are studied, regarding some of the vial
judgments, it is clear they are brought forth by the two prophets of God and
that these judgments are during the second part of the Tribulation. Thus, it
seems clear that the two prophets of God are upon the earth during the second
part of the Tribulation (the worst part). This is the same time that Jerusalem
shall be overrun by the Gentiles. The Antichrist will be in the temple; people
will be taking the mark and worshiping the image of the beast. These prophets
will be hated by the unbelieving world. Elijah, as mentioned previously, shall
come BEFORE…THE GREAT AND DREADFUL DAY OF THE LORD (which is Armageddon). Again,
this would put him upon the earth during the second part of the Tribulation.
Who are these two witnesses? Does God give us the answer to this question? Some say we do not know who either is. Some say one is Enoch, or Elijah, or Moses, or a combination of these. The Scriptures clearly show us who one is. Through God’s Word, we should be able to determine the identity of the other, also.
There
is absolutely no question that one witness is Elijah. It is written, BEHOLD,
I WILL SEND YOU ELIJAH THE PROPHET BEFORE THE COMING OF THE GREAT AND DREADFUL
DAY OF THE LORD: AND HE SHALL TURN THE HEART OF THE FATHERS TO THE CHILDREN,
AND THE HEART OF THE CHILDREN TO THEIR FATHERS, LEST I COME AND SMITE THE EARTH
WITH A CURSE-Mal 4:5,6. The "great and dreadful day of the Lord" is
the day Jesus Christ returns. It is the time of the Battle of Armageddon. Before
that day, Elijah will, indeed, come. This is also taught in the Passover feast,
as the youngest child is taught to go and look for the prophet.
During the 1260 days of their prophecy, it appears they will
shut off the rain. This seems to happen in the area of Israel
or possibly the Middle East, although the Scriptures are unclear what areas
shall be affected. Elijah shut off the rain for 3 ½ years in the Old Testament.
It is written, THEY SHALL PROPHESY A THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND THREESCORE DAYS…THESE
HAVE POWER TO SHUT HEAVEN, THAT IT RAIN NOT IN THE DAYS OF THEIR PROPHECY-Rev
11:3,6.
Elijah
never died. He was taken up by God in a whirlwind (or raptured); as it is written,
WHEN THE LORD WOULD TAKE UP ELIJAH INTO HEAVEN BY A WHIRLWIND-2 Ki 2:1; ELIJAH
WENT UP BY A WHIRLWIND INTO HEAVEN-2 Ki 2:11.
Some might say, didn't Elijah already come when Jesus was
on the earth about 2000 years ago? The answer to this is as follows. Let us
remember, there are two comings of the Lord. We are now awaiting His second
coming at the time of Armageddon. JOHN THE BAPTIST came before
Jesus IN THE SPIRIT AND POWER OF ELIJAH-Lk 1:17. The disciples asked Jesus,
WHY THEN SAY THE SCRIBES THAT ELIJAH MUST FIRST COME? JESUS ANSWERED...ELIJAH
TRULY SHALL FIRST COME, AND RESTORE ALL THINGS. BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT ELIJAH
IS COME ALREADY, AND THEY KNEW HIM NOT, BUT HAVE DONE UNTO HIM WHATSOEVER THEY
LISTED...THEN THE DISCIPLES UNDERSTOOD THAT HE SPAKE UNTO THEM OF JOHN THE BAPTIST-Mt
17:10-13. Jesus said, BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT ELIJAH IS INDEED COME, AND THEY
HAVE DONE UNTO HIM WHATSOEVER THEY LISTED, AS IT IS WRITTEN OF HIM-Mk 9:13.
The Scriptures clearly show that John the Baptist came in
the SPIRIT AND POWER OF ELIJAH. He had to prepare the way for the first coming
of Jesus. The Jews were unable to see that the Scriptures showed Jesus would
come twice. Only after Jesus ascended to sit at the right hand
of His Father, in heaven, was it understood that Jesus shall return. It is written,
BEHOLD, I WILL SEND YOU ELIJAH THE PROPHET BEFORE THE COMING OF THE GREAT AND
DREADFUL DAY OF THE LORD-Mal 4:5. Elijah will come in his own body as one of
the two witnesses.
John the Baptist came in the "SPIRIT"
of Elijah.
Elijah will come in his own body and in his own spirit.
You might then say, "How is this possible? Did Elijah have two spirits?"
The answer lies in the following. It is written, AND ELISHA SAID, I PRAY THEE,
LET A DOUBLE PORTION OF THY SPIRIT BE UPON ME. AND HE (Elijah)
SAID...IF THOU SEE ME WHEN I AM TAKEN FROM THEE, IT SHALL BE SO UNTO THEE...AND
ELIJAH WENT UP...AND ELISHA SAW IT-2 Ki 2:9-12. There was a double portion of
Elijah’s spirit. John the Baptist was "one portion." Elijah will come
"the other portion."
Clearly, one of the two witnesses is Elijah.
There
seems to be very little doubt that the second witness is Moses. The Scriptures
indicate that both witnesses have to be a Jew. Both Elijah and Moses were Jews.
It is written, THESE ARE THE TWO OLIVE TREES, AND THE TWO CANDLESTICKS
STANDING BEFORE THE GOD OF THE EARTH-Rev 11:4. The olive tree represents the
Jews or Israel; as it is written, THE LORD CALLED THY NAME, A GREEN OLIVE TREE-Jere
11:16.
These two witnesses are prophets. Moses fulfills this prophecy.
It is written, THEY SHALL PROPHESY-Rev 11:3; IN THE DAYS OF THEIR PROPHECY-Rev
11:6. God talked to Moses face to face. Aaron was given to Moses
to be his prophet-ref Ex 7:1.
Many of the miracles that will be done, during the Tribulation,
by the two witnesses were also done by Moses previously. The following are some
of them.
It is written, regarding the Tribulation, AND THE FIRST (angel)
WENT, AND POURED OUT HIS VIAL UPON THE EARTH; AND THERE FELL A NOISOME AND GRIEVOUS
SORE UPON THE MEN WHICH HAD THE MARK OF THE BEAST-Rev 16:2. Moses did something
similar in the Old Testament-ref Ex 9:10.
It is written, regarding the two witnesses during the Tribulation,
THESE HAVE POWER...OVER WATERS TO TURN THEM TO BLOOD-Rev 11:6. Moses did this
in the Old Testament-ref Ex 7:20.
When Jesus was on the Mount of Transfiguration, Moses and
Elijah were together when they appeared to Him. It is written, AND, BEHOLD,
THERE APPEARED UNTO THEM MOSES AND ELIJAH TALKING WITH HIM-Mt 17:3; ref Mk 9:4.
Again, all indications are that Moses will be with Elijah, during the Tribulation,
as the other witness.
Some may say that Moses was never raptured as Elijah was.
This is true; nevertheless, consider the following. When Moses died, the Bible
tells us that his natural force was not abated. It is written, AND MOSES WAS
AN HUNDRED AND TWENTY YEARS OLD WHEN HE DIED: HIS EYE WAS NOT DIM, NOR HIS NATURAL
FORCE ABATED (or gone)-Deut 34:7. Since we would expect Moses to have his natural
body when he returns during the Tribulation, we then should be able to understand
why Satan wanted to find out where his body was. Apparently, he wanted to destroy
it. Nevertheless, no man knows where it is. This should have prevented Moses
from returning. As it is written, YET MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL, WHEN CONTENDING
WITH THE DEVIL…ABOUT THE BODY OF MOSES-Jude 9; SO MOSES...DIED...AND HE (the
Lord) BURIED HIM...BUT NO MAN KNOWETH OF HIS SEPULCHER UNTO THIS DAY-Deut 34:5,6.
It seems God is protecting the body of Moses so that, when the day comes, Moses
will appear. God demonstrated how He can keep things from decaying or growing
old; as it is written, THY RAIMENT WAXED NOT OLD UPON THEE, NEITHER DID THY
FOOT SWELL, THESE FORTY YEARS-Deut 8:4.
Moses wanted to enter the Promised Land, but God told him
no. Yet it appears God will yet allow him to enter during the Tribulation. It
is written, AND I BESOUGHT THE LORD AT THAT TIME, SAYING, O LORD GOD...I PRAY
THEE, LET ME GO OVER, AND SEE THE GOOD LAND THAT IS BEYOND JORDAN...BUT THE
LORD WAS WROTH WITH ME FOR YOUR SAKES, AND WOULD NOT HEAR ME: AND THE LORD SAID
UNTO ME, LET IT SUFFICE THEE; SPEAK NO MORE UNTO ME OF THIS MATTER-Deut 3:23,25,26.
Some say the second witness is Enoch, because he was translated-ref
Heb 11:5. However, this cannot be accepted, because he was not a Jew, as he
lived before the flood. The two witnesses need to be "olive trees"
or Jews. Neither does he fulfill many of the other prophecies relating to the
two witnesses. There appears to be no other scriptural evidence to support this
view.
There is no question that one of the two witnesses is Elijah.
The biblical evidence that Moses is the other witness is very strong. The idea
that we do not know who either witness is has to be discounted in view of the
Scriptures.
Rev
11:3-AND I WILL GIVE POWER (or authority) UNTO MY TWO WITNESSES. The Lord gives
power to the two witness much as He did to His disciples in Lk 10:19; as it
is written, BEHOLD, I GIVE UNTO YOU POWER TO TREAD ON SERPENTS AND SCORPIONS,
AND OVER ALL THE POWER OF THE ENEMY: AND NOTHING SHALL BY ANY MEANS HURT YOU.
God sends forth two witnesses during the Tribulation. These
are also called TWO PROPHETS in Rev 11:10, and TWO OLIVE TREES and TWO CANDLESTICKS
in Rev 11:4. God gives them power. They shall witness the things God gives them
to say. They will stand with the truth against the lies of the false messiah.
AND THEY SHALL PROPHESY A THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND THREESCORE
DAYS (or 1260 days)-Rev 11:3. We are told they shall prophesy. Thus, they shall
witness and prophesy for 1260 days. Their lives are protected by God. Despite
the great power of the Antichrist, they cannot be killed until the days of their
prophecy are fulfilled. (Note, the length of the second part of the Tribulation
is 1260 days.) They are CLOTHED IN SACKCLOTH-Rev 11:3. These are not clothed
in the beautiful apparel that some priests, preachers, and rabbi wear, but rather
in sackcloth. Sackcloth was a form of clothing, which represented repentance,
humbleness, mourning, and distress.
Rev 11:4-THESE ARE THE TWO OLIVE TREES. Olive is often used
in the Scriptures to denote Hebrews or Jews. These are two Jews, which are prophets.
Jere 11:16; Ro 11:24-27 both use the word "olive" in the context of
Jews or Israel. These are also THE TWO CANDLESTICKS (or menorahs, or lampstands)
STANDING BEFORE THE GOD (or Lord) OF THE EARTH.
It is written, Zech 4:2,11-14-AND SAID UNTO ME, WHAT SEEST
THOU? AND I SAID, I HAVE LOOKED, AND BEHOLD A CANDLESTICK ALL OF GOLD, WITH
A BOWL UPON THE TOP OF IT, AND HIS SEVEN LAMPS THEREON, AND SEVEN PIPES TO THE
SEVEN LAMPS, WHICH ARE UPON THE TOP THEREOF. THEN ANSWERED I, AND SAID UNTO
HIM, WHAT ARE THESE TWO OLIVE TREES UPON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CANDLESTICK AND
UPON THE LEFT SIDE THEREOF? AND I ANSWERED AGAIN, AND SAID UNTO HIM, WHAT BE
THESE TWO OLIVE BRANCHES WHICH THROUGH THE TWO GOLDEN PIPES EMPTY THE GOLDEN
OIL OUT OF THEMSELVES? AND HE ANSWERED ME AND SAID, KNOWEST THOU NOT WHAT THESE
BE? AND I SAID, NO, MY LORD. THEN SAID HE, THESE ARE THE TWO ANOINTED ONES,
THAT STAND BY THE LORD OF THE WHOLE EARTH. The two here are considered to be
Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, the governor, and Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the
high priest. Their connection with the lampstands appears to be showing they
were empowered by the Holy Spirit, which is symbolized by the olive oil. In
like manner, the two witnesses will be empowered by the Holy Spirit. They will
accomplish God's will by the power of the Holy Spirit.
In Rev 11:5, we read, AND IF ANY MAN (or anyone) WILL HURT
THEM (or tries to do them harm). Undoubtedly, many will come against them to
try to hurt or kill them. However, when they do, FIRE PROCEEDETH (or comes)
OUT OF THEIR MOUTH, AND DEVOURETH (or consumes) THEIR ENEMIES. Elijah also caused
fire to come down out of heaven and devoured his enemies-ref 2 Ki 1:10-12. Thus,
Elijah spoke the word, and fire came down. This verse indicates that these prophets
will also speak the word, and fire will come forth, as a result of the words
which they speak. AND IF ANY MAN WILL HURT THEM (or tries to harm them), HE
MUST IN THIS MANNER BE KILLED (or must die). Anyone that will harm these two
prophets of God will be killed by fire.
Rev 11:6-THESE HAVE POWER (or authority) TO SHUT HEAVEN (or
the sky), THAT IT RAIN NOT IN THE DAYS (or during the period) OF THEIR PROPHECY
(or prophesying). During their 1260 days of witnessing and prophesying, the
rain will cease. The Scriptures do not specify if this will be worldwide or
just in the Middle East. Elijah also did this in the Old Testament. The date
he did it was +/-886 B.C. It is written, ELIJAH WAS A MAN SUBJECT TO LIKE PASSIONS
AS WE ARE, AND HE PRAYED EARNESTLY THAT IT MIGHT NOT RAIN: AND IT RAINED NOT
ON THE EARTH BY THE SPACE OF THREE YEARS AND SIX MONTHS-Ja 5:17. One can only
imagine how horrible conditions will be in Israel with no rain for the last
three and a half years of the Tribulation. Also note 1 Ki 8:35; Joel 1:2,10,20;
2 Chr 6:26. This also accounts for why the Euphrates is dried up, in Rev 16:12,
during the second part of the Tribulation.
AND (they) HAVE POWER (or authority) OVER WATERS TO TURN
THEM TO BLOOD. This also accounts for the rivers and fountains becoming blood,
in Rev 16:4, during the second part of the Tribulation. This is one of the miracles
that Moses did-ref Ex 7:14-25. These also have the power TO SMITE (or strike)
THE EARTH WITH ALL (or every kind of) PLAGUES, AS OFTEN AS THEY WILL (or want).
This would indicate that they will strike the earth with many plagues that are
not listed in the Scriptures. Moses smote the earth with many plagues in the
Old Testament-ref Ex 7:10-11:10.
It is written, regarding the two witnesses during the second
part of the Tribulation, AND THE FIFTH ANGEL POURED OUT HIS VIAL UPON THE SEAT
OF THE BEAST; AND HIS KINGDOM WAS FULL OF DARKNESS; AND THEY GNAWED THEIR TONGUES
FOR PAIN-Rev 16:10. Moses did this in the Old Testament. It is written, AND
MOSES STRETCHED FORTH HIS HAND TOWARD HEAVEN; AND THERE WAS A THICK DARKNESS
IN ALL THE LAND OF EGYPT THREE DAYS-Ex 10:22.
The first, the third, and the fifth vials are all things
that Moses did in the Old Testament.
Elijah, HE SHALL TURN THE HEART OF THE FATHERS TO THE CHILDREN,
AND THE HEART OF THE CHILDREN TO THEIR FATHERS, LEST I COME AND SMITE THE EARTH
WITH A CURSE-Mal 4:6.
He can be expected to TURN THE HEARTS OF...THE DISOBEDIENT
TO THE WISDOM OF THE JUST; TO MAKE READY A PEOPLE PREPARED FOR THE LORD-Lk 1:17.
Ultimately, they should be killed at approximately the end
of the Tribulation.
They
will be preparing people for the return of Jesus and prophesying of the things
that are about to come. They will be warning people and will be speaking the
things that are already written in the Revelation. They can be expected to witness:
THE VOICE OF HIM THAT CRIETH IN THE WILDERNESS, PREPARE YE THE WAY OF THE LORD,
MAKE STRAIGHT IN THE DESERT A HIGHWAY FOR OUR GOD. EVERY VALLEY SHALL BE EXALTED,
AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL SHALL BE MADE LOW: AND THE CROOKED SHALL BE MADE
STRAIGHT, AND THE ROUGH PLACES PLAIN: AND THE GLORY OF THE LORD SHALL BE REVEALED,
AND ALL FLESH SHALL SEE IT TOGETHER: FOR THE MOUTH OF THE LORD HATH SPOKEN IT-Isa
40:3-5. They can be expected to teach, BEHOLD, I WILL SEND MY MESSENGER, AND
HE SHALL PREPARE THE WAY BEFORE ME: AND THE LORD, WHOM YE SEEK, SHALL SUDDENLY
COME TO HIS TEMPLE, EVEN THE MESSENGER OF THE COVENANT, WHOM YE DELIGHT IN:
BEHOLD, HE SHALL COME, SAITH THE LORD OF HOSTS. BUT WHO MAY ABIDE THE DAY OF
HIS COMING? AND WHO SHALL STAND WHEN HE APPEARETH? FOR HE IS LIKE A REFINER’S
FIRE, AND LIKE FULLERS’ SOAP-Mal 3:1,2.
They can be expected to preach anything in the entire Bible
(regarding Bible prophecy) that relates to what is happening and will happen.
They should preach many of the same things the 144,000 Jews
preached.
They should teach the Gospel of the kingdom; as it is written,
AND THIS GOSPEL (or Good News) OF THE KINGDOM SHALL BE PREACHED (or announced)
IN ALL THE WORLD FOR A WITNESS UNTO ALL NATIONS; AND THEN SHALL THE END
COME-Mt 24:14.
They can be expected to teach, BABYLON (the great) IS FALLEN,
IS FALLEN, THAT GREAT CITY, BECAUSE SHE MADE ALL NATIONS DRINK OF THE (maddening)
WINE OF THE WRATH (or passion) OF HER FORNICATION (or adulteries, or immorality)
(or God's fury caused by her whoring-JNT60)-Rev 14:8.
In Rev 18:2, we see these words, BABYLON THE GREAT IS FALLEN,
IS FALLEN. Then, in Rev 17:18, it refers to the woman as THAT GREAT CITY. That
GREAT CITY is repeated in Rev 18:10,16,18,19, and 21. The great city is Rome.
The whore in the city is the religion that is intermingled with Rome, which
the people of the world have embraced, namely the Roman Catholic Church. The
city and whore shall be destroyed; as it is written, THE TEN HORNS...SHALL HATE
THE WHORE, AND SHALL…BURN HER WITH FIRE-Rev 17:16; BABYLON THE GREAT IS FALLEN,
IS FALLEN-Rev 18:2; HER SINS HAVE REACHED UNTO HEAVEN-Rev 18:5; HOW MUCH SHE
HATH GLORIFIED HERSELF-Rev 18:7; THEREFORE...SHE SHALL BE UTTERLY BURNED WITH
FIRE-Rev 18:8; FOR IN ONE HOUR IS THY JUDGMENT COME-Rev 18:10.
AND THE THIRD ANGEL FOLLOWED THEM, SAYING WITH A LOUD VOICE.
Once again, we see the words, "with a loud voice" as was the case
with angel one. The message is that the words, which the angel has to say, are
to be proclaimed loudly so that all can hear. This clear message is, IF ANY
MAN WORSHIP THE BEAST AND HIS IMAGE, AND RECEIVE HIS MARK
IN (or on) HIS FOREHEAD, OR IN (or on) HIS HAND-Rev 14:9. THE SAME SHALL DRINK
OF THE WINE OF THE WRATH (or fury) OF GOD, WHICH IS POURED OUT WITHOUT MIXTURE
(or undiluted, or full strength) INTO THE CUP OF HIS INDIGNATION (or rage, or
wrath)-Rev 14:10.
Those who choose to ignore God's warning, God is clearly
and loudly telling them that His full wrath (or fury) shall be poured into the
cup of His rage (or wrath). Then these people will have to drink of the full,
undiluted contents of this cup. These people SHALL BE TORMENTED WITH FIRE AND
BRIMSTONE (or sulfur). The verse continues, IN THE PRESENCE OF (or before) THE
HOLY ANGELS, AND IN THE PRESENCE OF (or before) THE LAMB-Rev 14:10.
AND THE SMOKE OF THEIR TORMENT ASCENDETH (or goes, or rises)
UP FOR EVER AND EVER: AND THEY HAVE NO REST DAY NOR NIGHT. These followers of
Satan are clearly shown the truth, yet choose to disregard it. They shall be
tormented for time without end. There shall never be a day or a night for ever
and ever that they shall not be tormented. They will never have any rest. They
will never have a moment of relief. Smoke will come forth from the lake
of fire from their torment; it shall also rise up for ever and
ever. These are those WHO WORSHIP THE BEAST AND HIS IMAGE, AND WHOSOEVER RECEIVETH
THE MARK OF HIS NAME-Rev 14:11.
HERE IS THE PATIENCE (or when perseverance is needed) OF
THE SAINTS (or God's people). The saints can rest assured that the disobedient
shall receive the just reward for their actions. HERE ARE THEY THAT KEEP (or
obey) THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD, AND THE FAITH OF JESUS (or remain faithful to
Jesus)-Rev 14:12. The true saints do keep God's commandments; this testifies
of their love for God-ref Jn 14:15. The true Christians do remain faithful to
Jesus, even when confronted with death. Note the words in Rev 12:17- WHICH KEEP
THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD, AND HAVE THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS CHRIST-Rev 12:17.
(Commentary)
The
time period may be approximately one to three and a half days before the end
of the Tribulation. The two prophets of God have been witnessing for 1260 days.
They have been standing for the truth. Most of the world has rejected their
message. The Revelation foretold how they would be killed, but then rise from
the dead.
Once the two prophets of God (Elijah and presumably Moses)
have finished their witnessing, they are killed by the Antichrist. Their dead
bodies shall lie in the street of Jerusalem and will not be put into a grave.
All the world should be able to see that the Antichrist overcame them and killed
them. This will further prove to the world that the Antichrist is really God,
and that taking the mark and worshiping the image was the right thing to do.
The people of the world will be happy. These two prophets
brought numerous plagues against the world and tormented the people. They had
shut off the rain; it rained not in the days of their prophecy. Now that they
are dead, the people of the world will give gifts one to another and rejoice.
They, undoubtedly, think that the rain will return and the plagues will cease.
For 3 ½ days, the bodies of the two prophets shall remain
in the street.
(Scripture with commentary)
Rev
11:7-AND WHEN THEY SHALL HAVE FINISHED THEIR TESTIMONY (or witnessing), or it
might be said, when their 1260 days are expired, THE BEAST (which is called
Antichrist) THAT ASCENDETH OUT OF THE BOTTOMLESS PIT (or Abyss) SHALL MAKE WAR
(or attack, or fight) AGAINST THEM, AND SHALL OVERCOME THEM, AND KILL THEM.
The Antichrist shall kill the two witnesses when their ministry is finished,
as it has been decreed by the Lord.
Rev 11:8-AND THEIR DEAD BODIES SHALL LIE IN THE STREET OF
THE GREAT CITY. The bodies of the two witnesses shall remain in the street of
the city. Now that the Antichrist has overcome them, the people of the world
will, undoubtedly, be reassured that he is the real Christ, and these two witnesses
were false prophets.
The city of Jerusalem, WHICH SPIRITUALLY (or whose name,
to reflect its spiritual condition-JNT108) IS CALLED SODOM AND EGYPT.
The name "Sodom" reflects Jerusalem’s spiritual condition.
Multitudes have denied the true God of heaven and worshiped
the image of the beast (the Antichrist). They have taken the mark of the beast.
They have completely corrupted themselves. They are spiritually dead. The name
"Egypt" may reflect their bondage—they were oppressed and were slaves
to sin.
The spiritual name of Jerusalem, at this time, is far different
than its name during the Millennium. The verse continues, WHERE ALSO OUR LORD
WAS CRUCIFIED (or was executed on a stake-JNT109). Jesus was crucified,
outside the wall of Jerusalem, at the place called Golgotha. Their bodies, being
left in the street of Jerusalem, seem to indicate that the ministry of the two
prophets will be in Jerusalem and Israel.
Rev 11:9-AND THEY (or some) OF THE PEOPLE AND KINDREDS (or
tribes) AND TONGUES (or languages) AND NATIONS SHALL SEE (or gaze on) THEIR
DEAD BODIES (for) THREE DAYS AND AN HALF, AND SHALL NOT SUFFER (or refuse) THEIR
DEAD BODIES (or corpses) TO BE PUT IN GRAVES (or in a tomb). Their bodies, being
left in the street, may show the enormous hatred that people had for these two
witnesses of God. The many problems the world had been going through were blamed
on these two prophets of God. It would appear this prophecy could not have been
fulfilled until the times in which we are now living. How is it possible that
the people of the world are able to see their dead bodies? The answer would
appear to be the use of satellites and television. Through the technology of
this age, we can see events—as they happen—from around the world on television
and on computers. One might wonder, if their bodies may be left lying in the
area that our Lord Jesus Christ Himself was crucified?
Rev 11:10-AND THEY THAT DWELL UPON THE EARTH (or the inhabitants
of the earth-NIV) SHALL REJOICE OVER THEM, AND MAKE MERRY (and celebrate), AND
SHALL SEND GIFTS ONE TO ANOTHER; BECAUSE THESE TWO PROPHETS TORMENTED THEM THAT
DWELT (or live) ON THE EARTH. The two prophets had warned people to repent.
They had warned people of what was happening. But the people of the world chose
to believe the lies of the Antichrist and false prophet. The two prophets had
proven they were of God by the things they did. The corrupt people of the world
were tormented by the many plagues that they brought. But now they were killed
by the Antichrist. The wicked people of the earth probably believe the plagues
will now stop. They rejoice, and celebrate, and give gifts to each other. It
would appear the two prophets had warned that Armageddon was about to happen
and the people would shortly perish and be in hell. The reason we believe these
are some of the things they warned the people about is because they appear in
the Revelation. But the people chose not to believe them; they were positive
that the two prophets of God were wrong.
Since we have been unable to pinpoint the exact day that
the two witnesses appear on the earth to begin their 1260 day ministry, it is
equally difficult to pinpoint the exact day that they will be killed. We might
consider, they are killed within one to three days of the end of the Tribulation.
This would put their ascension into heaven at the last day of the Tribulation
or immediately after.
Satan
will do everything possible to stop what is about to happen. For 3 ½ days, the
dead bodies of the two prophets shall remain in the street. Then, all of a sudden,
something incredible happens. The two witnesses come back to life; they stand
upon their feet while their enemies actually witness this happening. Tremendous
fear and terror grips all who see this. Suddenly, their enemies seem to recognize
that these two prophets really were of God and that the Antichrist is not God.
They now realize that the Battle of Armageddon is close at hand and that they
may soon perish and be eternally lost.
Then there is a voice from heaven, which says, "Come
up hither." The two prophets of God ascend up to heaven in a cloud in the
sight of their enemies. This appears to happen at the end of the Tribulation,
or immediately after the Tribulation.
Consider the following. Here you are laughing and celebrating,
because the Antichrist (whom you believe to be the true God) has killed the
two witnesses. Then, all of a sudden, the two witnesses come back to life as
was prophesied. All of a sudden you understand that the Antichrist is really
of Satan and that you were deceived. You now realize that you have taken the
mark of the Antichrist, and there is no forgiveness—you have committed an unforgivable
sin. You cannot be forgiven. You will perish to hell. There is no way out. You
now realize the Battle of Armageddon is about to explode and that the return
of the true Messiah, Jesus Christ, is about to take place; you will be dead
in a few days. You begin to panic. Tremendous terror will now come into the
hearts of those that see the two witnesses come back to life. Some may begin
to scream, "No, no, it isn’t possible!" But it will be too late.
The same people, who were giving gifts one to another, are
now so terrified, some fall over dead from fear of what is soon to happen.
It
is written, Rev 11:11-AND AFTER THREE DAYS AND AN HALF THE SPIRIT (or breath)
OF LIFE FROM GOD ENTERED INTO THEM, AND THEY STOOD UPON THEIR FEET; AND GREAT
FEAR (or terror) FELL UPON (or struck) THEM WHICH SAW THEM. As already mentioned,
the people of the earth had been giving gifts one to another and celebrating
the death of these two prophets of God. But now, after three and a half days,
the two lifeless bodies of the prophets stand up. We might speculate that not
only will the people standing near see it, but people around the world may also
witness this incredible event through television. Just imagine the news coverage.
It now appears, God will enable many that witness this event
to understand that the Battle of Armageddon is on the doorsteps and that horrible
events are about to take place. What other things they might recognize is difficult
to determine. They might recognize that they were wrong, in that they took the
mark of the beast and worshiped his image. They could understand that they have
been following Satan and not the true God. They may realize that eternal death
lies ahead. Terror now strikes them. MEN’S HEARTS FAILING THEM FOR FEAR, AND
FOR LOOKING AFTER THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE COMING ON THE EARTH-Lk 21:26. People
will begin to fall over dead from sheer terror. (This Scripture may apply from
this point up to, and including, the Battle of Armageddon.)
Rev 11:12-AND THEY (the two prophets of God) HEARD A GREAT
(or loud) VOICE FROM HEAVEN SAYING UNTO THEM, COME UP HITHER (or come up here).
AND THEY ASCENDED (or went) UP TO HEAVEN IN A CLOUD; AND THEIR ENEMIES BEHELD
THEM (or while their enemies looked on-NIV). It appears that a loud voice, which
many will be able to hear, will ring forth. That voice from heaven will say,
"COME UP HITHER." The world looks on, in horror, as these two witnesses
are raptured or taken up to heaven. Their enemies now seem to understand that
what the two prophets had told them was true. Jesus is about to return IN FLAMING
FIRE TAKING VENGEANCE ON THEM THAT KNOW NOT GOD, AND THAT OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL
OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST-2 Thes 1:8.
The two witnesses will prophesy 1260 days
